Description
Why Engaging SEL?
My Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum is aligned to the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) Competencies of Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. This curriculum is research-based, whole-child approach to teaching life skills students will need to be successful in the classroom and beyond. My curriculum is designed to be flexible to fit a variety of schedules and needs. These lessons are designed to be incorporated into your existing curriculum and instruction. You can make the lesson as long or as short as you wish and use as many or as few of the lesson components as you want. Lessons can be broken up into multiple “bite-sized” chunks throughout the day or taught all at once. These lessons can be adapted to work for you!
Each lesson includes:
- Materials Needed
- Essential Question: Each lesson has an essential question that can be used as the question of the day/week. It is intended to be used as a morning meeting question or writing prompt before the lesson is taught. This can be used to gauge students’ prior knowledge about the topic before instruction and activate any prior knowledge the students may have.
- Intro: a quick statement, or hook that will tell students what they will be learning in this particular lesson.
- Mentor Text: I recommend specific mentor texts for each lesson. Students will come together in a whole group or small group setting to discuss what was learned from the mentor text.
- Activity: Students will participate in an engaging activity to continue their learning from the mentor text.
- Follow Up: This is an opportunity for students to share their work, their thinking or any Ah-ha moments they got from the lesson. This is also an opportunity for the educator to give the exit ticket if applicable.
- Conclusion: This will be a follow-up question that mirrors the question of the day. This is designed to be incorporated to an end-of-the-day or closing meeting to recap the learning or lesson of the day or week.
In this unit, students will learn how to identify, express, and manage their emotions through engaging lessons that include teacher-facilitated discussions and activities. Help students increase their emotional awareness through 9 detailed lesson plans with mentor texts, engaging interactive activities, class discussions and follow-up activities to continue the learning. I’ve also included a Note Home to explain what the students are learning and how families can help at home.
